DAIKYO Receives Award for Lions Kyoto Gosho-Minami Residence at GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2023

Oct 05, 2023

TOKYO, Japan - October 5, 2023 - DAIKYO INCORPORATED (“DAIKYO”) announced today that it won an award for its condominium Lions Kyoto Gosho-Minami Residence at the GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2023, presented by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion.

Lions Kyoto Gosho-Minami Residence

Despite being located in the center of Kyoto, Lions Kyoto Gosho-Minami Residence stands in a quiet residential area with traditional Kyoto townhouses and other long-established businesses to the east of Nijo-jo Castle, and is the first newly-built condominium in Kyoto with ZEH-M Oriented specifications.
To harmonize with the historical streetscape of Kyoto and create a new exterior for the building that carries on tradition into the future, the horizontal lines of the eaves are emphasized and the vertical bars randomly arranged, and also the shape of the eaves and beams was devised with those purposes in mind. In addition, the presence of pillars and walls has been reduced, and the entrance hall was designed in a Japanese style to create “transparency” using traditional techniques such as shoji screens that allow soft light and the scenery beyond to penetrate. Also, the large glass openings, achieved by taking advantage of the open corner location facing a park and the three courtyards (atriums) within the building, ensure daylighting and ventilation. The high level of design that evokes the beauty of Japan was highly evaluated in this GOOD DESIGN AWARD received by DAIKYO.
DAIKYO will continue to stay in touch with social issues and customer needs to provide new products and services.

1. Lions Kyoto Gosho-Minami Residence
■Overview
The property is within a Kyoto Historical City Aesthetic Landscape District with detailed regulations on matters such as a 15 m height limit and the installation of eaves, and is located on a rare and expansive corner plot measuring 38 m north-south and 22 m east-west. With its relaxed building plan that takes advantage of the location, as well as a high level of heat insulation while providing a sense of openness, Lions Kyoto Gosho-Minami Residence is a comfortable and environmentally-friendly condominium.

■Features

Achieves a new exterior for an RC building that carries on the historical landscape into the future

Exterior design avoiding the heavy feel of an RC structure

The placement of the columns and the shape of the eaves and beams is designed to avoid the heavy feel of reinforced concrete structures. Also, the horizontal lines of the eaves are emphasized to hide the beams, and vertical bars are placed to obscure the boundaries between columns, walls, and glass, thereby reducing the presence of the walls.

Expresses “transparent” Japanese-style space

Soft daylighting enters through the shoji screens in the corner of the entrance hall, providing continuity between the interior and the exterior where greenery can be seen, making a contemporary Japanese-style space that creates a sense of “transparency.”

Realizes a comfortable living environment with a sense of openness, daylighting, and ventilation

To take advantage of the benefits of the corner plot facing a lush green park, corner pillars were eliminated to make a wide-span structure, with large glass openings included in the units. In addition, three courtyards (atriums) were created, designed to bring light into the interior corridors and units.

■Evaluation comment from the judges of GOOD DESIGN AWARD
In areas where historical landscapes are to be preserved, it is a difficult task to create a new exterior while continuing the streetscape. Lions Kyoto Gosho-Minami Residence is built on a corner plot with a wide frontage in the historical landscape area of Kyoto. Its exterior has a large impact on its surroundings, but the layout of the units around the communal spaces creates a beautiful exterior through the eaves, sashes, railings and vertical louvers. The eaves, in particular, which emphasize horizontal lines, are thin and sharp at the edges, and together with the delicate vertical louvers, give the building a sense of Japanese beauty. Although there was an opinion that a more subtle design could have been used for the railing wall on the side of the corner plot, the overall design achieved a high level of design quality and was also given high ratings by the judges.
