ORIX Eco Services to launch waste processing service for solar panels

TOKYO, Japan - March 10, 2020 - ORIX Eco Services Corporation (“ORIX Eco Services”) announced today that it will launch a nationwide service to process used, waste solar panels from solar power plants.

ORIX Eco Services uses the unique expertise and networks it has cultivated through the proper processing of waste proper processing business at ORIX-owned lease properties to provide support to customers nationwide for the re-use, recycling, and proper processing of materials that are no longer required. Now, ORIX Eco Services has teamed up with industrial waste collection, transportation, intermediate processing, and final processing companies across the country to establish a proper processing system based on crushing and landfill-disposing of solar panels. The service will be available even when solar panels are unexpectedly broken or damaged due to natural disasters.

Since 2012, when the Japan government introduced its Feed-in Tariff Scheme for purchasing renewable energy at fixed prices, there has been a rapid rise in solar power generation; as a result, there are concerns that the 2030s will see large volumes of solar power waste being generated, resulting in untenable demand for proper processing. At present, no recycling technologies exist to effectively recycle used solar panels and, for this reason, crushing and landfill disposal is the mainstream method of processing. Going forward, ORIX Eco Services intends to work together with industrial groups such as the Glass Recycling Committee of Japan and its member companies, and engage in efforts to recycle solar panels.
