Feb 20, 2020

TOKYO, Japan - February 20, 2020 - ORIX Real Estate Corporation (“ORIX Real Estate”) announced that KYOTO AQUARIUM, a company-run aquarium that is currently undergoing large-scale renovations, will re-open on April 29, 2020.

GURURI offers a 360-degree panoramic experience

The Kyoto Jellyfish Research Division
will be open to visitors

The renovations will see the creation of a new jellyfish area measuring approximately 40 meters in length and covering approximately 350 square meters. Named “Kurage Wonder” (“the wonders of Jellyfish”), it will house the most jellyfish of any aquarium in West Japan with approximately 5,000 jellyfish from across approximately 20 different species on display, including Japanese sea nettles and Pacific sea nettles. Approximately 10 tanks will show the stages of development of Moon jellyfish as they grow, while the GURURI 360-degree panoramic dome tank, measuring some 6.5 meters in diameter, will contain 1,500 Moon jellyfish. Entering through an arch-shaped entrance, the tank provides an immersive, 360-degree experience of Moon jellyfish.

A new Kyoto Jellyfish Research Division will also be established, where visitors will be able to see at close quarters what sort of jellyfish breeding and research activities the aquarium keepers carry out on a daily basis. The division laboratory will provide opportunities for visitors to enjoy previously hidden “backstage” activities—which cannot normally be observed in detail—while conversing with aquarium keepers. Hands-on experiential activities are also planned.

KYOTO AQUARIUM has been engaged in the research and study of jellyfish since its establishment, and has also implemented “mobile aquarium” initiatives that enable kindergarten students in Kyoto City to learn about jellyfish ecology while at their kindergartens as well as at other locations. Following the large-scale renovations, KYOTO AQUARIUM intends to promote the attractions of jellyfish and their unusual ecologies through a variety of exhibition methods, and create opportunities for as many people to learn about these creatures as possible.

Visitors will feel as if they are swimming in the waters alongside them.

At the division laboratory, aquarium staff will carry out their jellyfish breeding and research activities—which previously took place out of sight—in the open. Aquarium staff will provide unique insights into the jellyfish they handle on a daily basis, and visitors will be able to observe at close quarters how they create optimal environments for the jellyfish and what sort of everyday tasks they carry out. Through interaction with aquarium staff, the division laboratory will provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about jellyfish ecology in an enjoyable manner.

3. 5,000 jellyfish from across approximately 20 different species—the largest jellyfish display of its kind in West Japan
Jellyfish that float in the water, jellyfish that live on the seafloor, poisonous jellyfish—5,000 jellyfish from across approximately 20 different species with distinctive shapes and colors will be displayed in tanks designed to suit their ecologies.
