One-Way Car Sharing Service “smaco” to be Extended for Another Six Months

Mar 18, 2015

TOKYO, Japan - March 18, 2015 - ORIX Auto Corporation, a subsidiary of ORIX Corporation (TSE: 8591, NYSE: IX), Mercedes-Benz Japan Co., Ltd., and AMANO Corporation (hereinafter, the three companies together as the "Companies") today announced that the service period of "smart oneway carsharing" (service brand name "smaco"*1), the one-way car sharing service jointly provided by the Companies, will be extended until September 30, 2015 (extension period: six months from April 1 to September 30, 2015).

After introducing the service throughout various areas in Yokohama City during the past six months, the Companies discovered that the demand for one-way car sharing was higher in the central and southern part of the city. Based on this finding, from April 1, the Companies will proceed to relocate certain car sharing stations and also add new ones. By monitoring the needs of users in areas with high service turnover, and by promoting the usage of the car sharing stations with improved ease of access, the Companies aim to contribute to the local economy and tourism industry in Yokohama.

In addition to the previous fee structure where service fee is charged in 15-minute increments, a six-hour package fee and a nighttime package fee will also be introduced to the service. The two package fees will further enhance user convenience and enable the Companies to continue to monitor the needs and issues involving extended hours of one-way car sharing. Conventional round-trip*2 usage of the service is also expected to increase following implementation of the package fees. The Companies intend to compare the service usage under both one-way and round-trip methods, and determine the optimal model for introducing electric vehicles (EV) car sharing to the market. In addition, the Companies will launch "smaco 1,000yen Discount Campaign" to commemorate the extension of the service period.

The smaco service was launched on September 1, 2014 pursuant to a notice issued by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on March 27, 2014*3. Popularization of one-way car sharing is expected to enhance the convenience of "park & ride rail" schemes, the combination of public transportation and car sharing. It is also expected to ease traffic congestion and have the effect of reducing CO2 emissions by curtailing the unnecessary and non-urgent use of automobiles. The smaco service was also selected as a Yokohama Low Carbon Transportation Promotion project by Yokohama City.

By extending the smaco service period, the Companies will continue to explore the optimal business model for one-way car sharing and the role it can play among conventional urban transportation.
