ORIX Launches First Power Grid Energy Storage Plants Project Through Joint Investment with External Investors

Sep 30, 2026

TOKYO, Japan – September 30, 2026 – ORIX Corporation (“ORIX”) announced today that, through joint investment with three external investors, it has begun construction of two power grid*1 energy storage plants: the Yufu Energy Storage Plant in Yufu, Oita, and the Yonezawa Energy Storage Plant in Yonezawa, Yamagata.
Three external investors, including a consolidated subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation, are participating in the project. This is the first time ORIX has developed power grid energy storage plants using capital from external investors. ORIX holds a 23.7% interest in the project, while the three external investors collectively hold a 76.3% interest.

The Yufu Energy Storage Plant is scheduled to commence operation in 2028, while the Yonezawa Energy Storage Plant is scheduled to commence operation in 2030. The two plants will connect large-scale storage batteries to the power grid, with a rated output*2 of 70MW and a rated capacity*3 of 280 MWh at the Yufu Energy Storage Plant while a rated output of 75 MWand and a rated capacity of 309 MWh at the Yonezawa Energy Storage Plant.
In this project, ORIX will be responsible for asset management, including decision-making support and business management related to the development and operation of the energy storage plants. ORIX Renewable Energy Management Corporation, an ORIX Group company, will be responsible for safety management during construction as well as the plants’ operation and maintenance (O&M) work following the commencement of operation.

Amid renewable energy being promoted as the main source of power in order to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050, power generation from solar and wind power fluctuates significantly depending on weather conditions, making the stable supply of electricity a challenge. The power grid energy storage plants help stabilize the supply and demand of electricity by charging electricity when there is a surplus and discharging it when there is a shortage, thereby contributing to the effective use of renewable energy.

ORIX entered the energy storage plant business in 2022 and has advanced the development of the Kinokawa Energy Storage Plant*4 and the Maibara Koto Energy Storage Plant.*5 ORIX will continue to promote the development of energy storage plants nationwide in Japan by collaborating with municipalities and companies with to make effective use of underutilized land.
Expanding the asset management business is one of the key initiatives in the ORIX Group’s long-term vision. In the renewable energy field, including energy storage plants, ORIX aims to improve capital efficiency by incorporating third-party capital, expand its asset management business, and improve ROE across the Group.

*1 The series of systems for delivering electricity from power plants to consumers, encompassing power transformation, transmission, and distribution.
*2 The value of instantaneous output.
*3 The amount of electricity that can be discharged. Based on one charge-discharge cycle per day, the rated capacity of the Yufu Energy Storage Plant is equivalent to the daily electricity usage of approximately 23,000 average households, while that of the Yonezawa Energy Storage Plant is equivalent to the daily electricity usage of approximately 28,000 average households. (Calculated by ORIX based on the Ministry of the Environment, “Statistical Survey of CO2 Emissions in the Household Sector—Household Energy Consumption.Open Link in New Window” (in Japanese))
*4 ORIX Begins Operation of Kinokawa Energy Storage Plant, the First Plant in Its Energy Storage Plant Business, in Wakayama (November 29, 2024)
*5 ORIX Constructs One of Japan’s Largest Energy Storage Plants with a Capacity of 134 MW in Maibara, Shiga (May 30, 2024)
