ORIX Eco Services Launches Initiative to Validate a Circular Business Model of Used Home Appliances in the Rental Market

Mar 05, 2026

TOKYO, Japan – March 5, 2026 – ORIX Eco Services Corporation ("ORIX Eco Services") announced today that it has commenced an initiative to validate a circular business model, in collaboration with home appliance manufacturers and rental service business operators, to develop a business model under which used home appliances are refurbished*1 and circulated in the consumer rental market.

Specifically, in December 2025, ORIX Eco Services entered into a proof-of-concept (PoC) agreement*2 (the “Agreement”) with Sony Corporation*3 (“Sony”). As the first initiative under the Agreement, ORIX Eco Services will conduct verification of refurbishment and redistribution of used televisions collected by Sony. ORIX Eco Services will refurbish the products entrusted to it by Sony in accordance with Sony’s prescribed work standards. The refurbished products will be purchased by ORIX Corporation as manufacturer-refurbished products and then provided by ORIX to CLAS Inc. (“CLAS”), which operates the furniture and home appliance rental subscription service “CLAS,” as products dedicated for rental use.
Through this initiative, the lineup of televisions handled by CLAS will be expanded, enabling customers to rent high-quality televisions while keeping initial costs low. Moreover, for products returned to CLAS after the rental period, ORIX Eco Services will examine approaches to extending product lifespans and maintaining quality in redistribution through maintenance by CLAS and re-refurbishment by ORIX Eco Services. At the same time, ORIX Eco Services will work to reduce environmental impact across the entire lifecycle and maximize economic value.

ORIX Eco Services will leverage the knowledge and operational expertise established through the results of this field trial to consider expanding the initiative to other home appliances in the future. For products that have reached the end of their usable life, the company will examine the development of mechanisms that take into account the entire process from collection to resource recovery, enabling materials such as plastics contained in the products to be smoothly returned to the recycling processes of home appliance manufacturers. Through these efforts, ORIX Eco Services aims to promote the effective use of resources and contribute to cyclic use.

As one of its focus areas, ORIX Group has set “global warming and limited resources” as a key theme and is working toward realizing a circular economy as part of a solution to these issues. ORIX Eco Services will continue contributing to the realization of a society that reuses and recycles by leveraging its diverse expertise and corporate networks to build and manage circular business models in collaboration with home appliance manufacturers and services business operators.

*1 Inspecting and servicing used products in accordance with manufacturer standards and restoring them to a reusable condition.
*2 An agreement intended to verify the feasibility of technologies and operations in a real-world environment prior to full-scale commercialization.
*3 "Sony", "SONY" are registered trademarks or trademarks of Sony Group Corporation or its affiliates.
