ORIX to Develop Accommodation Facilities on the Coast of Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures
Plans to Open 10 Facilities with 1,400 Rooms by Spring 2013 Starting with Kamaishi City

Sep 19, 2012

TOKYO, Japan - September 19, 2012 - ORIX Corporation (TSE: 8591; NYSE: IX), a leading integrated financial services group, announced today that it has begun developing accommodation facilities along the coast of Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, which were badly affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The facilities are intended for workers helping with recovery and reconstruction efforts and ordinary customers. By the spring of 2013, ORIX plans to have opened approximately 1,400 rooms at 10 locations.

Recovery and reconstruction efforts are now in full swing in the disaster-hit areas 18 months after the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, there is a shortage of lodgings for use by workers, as well as volunteers and government employees supporting recovery and reconstruction, making this an issue that must be quickly addressed. At the same time, building regulations and restrictions have been imposed in line with reconstruction plans in many coastal areas devastated by the tsunami. As a consequence, vacant sites not subject to building restrictions and fit for constructing accommodation are in short supply.

ORIX plans to build as many rooms as it can on sites with good access for the people involved with recovery and reconstruction. To this end, ORIX will employ the Satokou Steel Unit Total Technology (SSUT) method, a heavy gauge steel structure construction method developed by Satokou Inc., which will enable the efficient construction of rooms on small lots of land. Furthermore, this method will enable the construction of robust accommodation facilities in a short space of time.

The Kamaishi Recovery Building, which is the first of the accommodation facilities scheduled for construction, will be built by Satokou on land leased by ORIX from the landowner. ORIX, the building owner, and Yamamoto Co., Ltd., which will run and manage the facility, will sign a building lease agreement. In addition to serving as lodgings, the upper floors of the building (5th and 6th floors) will be occupied by a childcare facility and a storage area for emergency supplies, respectively. Moreover, the rooftop 16 meters above ground will serve as a refuge space measuring approximately 270 square meters. The building will thus be a place to take refuge for the surrounding area in an emergency. After the opening of this facility, ORIX will support the recovery and reconstruction of Kamaishi through management closely tied to the area, including employing staff for the accommodation facility.

Moving forward, ORIX intends to create and propose plans optimized for people involved with recovery and reconstruction, based on quick and accurate identification of the various needs in the disaster-hit areas. In this way, ORIX hopes to contribute to the quick recovery of these areas.
