Children’s Hands-on Learning Program in Imabari City, Ehime

TOKYO, Japan - February 14, 2018 - ORIX Miyauchi Foundation hosted the Children's Hands-on Learning Program on January 27, 2018, to give children in Ehime Prefecture the opportunity to learn about shipbuilding and nature. The visit to the shipbuilding plant was arranged in cooperation with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture; President: Yukito Higaki).

This was the first time the event was held in Ehime. We invited 50 children and staff from foster homes and maternal and child living support facilities in Ehime Prefecture on a tour of Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Shimanami Earth Land for a chance to learn about shipbuilding and nature in the Shimanami Area.

Outline:
(1) Learn about shipbuilding at Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Visit to the plant, etc.)
(2) Lunch
(3) Learn about nature at Shimanami Earth Land (woodwork class/stroll in forests, etc.)
(4) Snack

The excited children were heard to shout, "Wow, it's giant!" and "Incredible!" as they got a first-hand look at how big ships are built. During the Q&A session at the end of the tour, the youngsters asked "How long does it take to build a ship?" "How can I become a shipbuilder?" "How much does one of these ships cost?" During the afternoon nature activity at Shimanami Earth Land, the children enjoyed playing with volunteers from the ORIX Matsuyama Branch Office. Everyone had fun making a fire, and then cooking and eating sausages and marshmallows.
