Carbon Disclosure

ORIX Group aims to be a carbon neutral business by providing eco services that reduce the CO2 emissions of customers and society by an amount that exceeds the CO2 emissions from ORIX Group's business activities.

CO2 Emissions from ORIX Group Business Activities 434,000t-CO2(415,600)

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011, the volume of CO2 emitted as a result of ORIX Group business activities was 434,000t-CO2. This represented a 4.4% increase year-on-year, but a 1.6% decrease when compared to the base year of fiscal year ended March 31, 2008. The main factors behind the year-on-year increase were an increase in both the number and utilization of properties in the real estate operations.

Customer CO2 Emissions Reduced by ORIX Group Eco Services 200,300t-CO2(146,400)

In fiscal year ended March 31, 2011, provision of ORIX Group Eco Services resulted in decreases in CO2 emissions throughout society amounting to 200,300t-CO2. This reduction was 37% higher than in the previous fiscal year, primarily due to the promotion of car sharing and carbon credit initiatives as well as the expansion of the scope of services applicable as Eco Services.

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011, CO2 emissions from ORIX Group business activities totaled 434,000t-CO2. The calculation methods used are as follows.

Scope of Calculation

  • Business operations: Emissions from the operation of 147 business sites (previous fiscal year: 136 sites) for which energy-use data could be obtained from among the ORIX Group's business sites, and from gasoline consumed during the operation of 1,565 business vehicles (previous fiscal year: 1,607 vehicles) used by employees.
  • Real estate: Emissions from 277 (previous fiscal year: 236) buildings and facilities, such as office buildings, golf courses, hotels and training facilities, sports stadiums, and an aquarium, including tenanted properties, owned and operated in the real estate business (excludes properties where the tenant has all the energy management rights).
  • Automobiles: Emissions from the use of rental cars at directly managed stores and emissions from electricity consumption of 105 directly managed stores (previous fiscal year: 124 stores). CO2 emissions of 1,101t-CO2 from the use of car sharing have already been offset using carbon credits.
  • Equipment: Emissions from the transport of rental equipment at ORIX Rentec, and emissions from electricity consumption, etc. at three facilities including ORIX Rentec Technology Centers.
  • Environment: Emissions from waste processing facilities (2 locations) and power generation facilities (1 location).

Calculation Method

CO2 emissions are calculated based on the "Ministerial Ordinance Concerning Calculation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Associated with Business Activities of Specified Emitters."

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011, estimated customer CO2 emissions reduced by ORIX Group eco services totaled 200,300t-CO2. The calculation methods used are as follows.

Scope of Calculation

Seven of the eco services provided by the ORIX Group during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011, for which estimated customer CO2 reductions can be calculated.

Calculation Method

  • ESCO business: CO2 reductions are recorded for ESCO contracts in which CO2 reductions can be identified.
  • Carbon credit: Calculated based on sales volumes.
  • Car sharing: Based on the assumed reduction of CO2 = "1.89t-CO2/year-person" as a result of switching from the use of privately owned cars to car sharing according to the "Report on the Effect of Reduction of Environmental Burden by Car Sharing and Review of Measures for Dissemination" released by the Foundation for Promoting Personal Mobility and Ecological Transportation in 2006.
  • Car rental: Calculated by multiplying the difference between the CO2 emissions (catalog figures) of hybrid vehicles used at ORIX Auto's directly managed stores and the CO2 emission (catalog figures) of gasoline vehicles of the same class by the total distance driven by hybrid vehicles.
  • Eco-friendly real estate development: Calculated by multiplying the difference between the estimated value of CO2 emitted due to the consumption of energy for the operation of eco-friendly buildings and the CO2 emitted due to the consumption of energy for the operation of standard buildings by the total floor space of eco-friendly buildings.
  • Solar power system: Calculated by multiplying the assumed reduction of CO2 = "334g-CO2/kWh" described in the "Rules for Voluntary Data Disclosure by Industries" released by the Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011, by the amount of energy generated through solar power systems.
  • Biomass power generation business: Calculated by multiplying the substitution coefficient of "0.000561t-CO2/kWh" listed in the report "Concerning Public Announcement of Electricity Business-Specific Actual Emissions Coefficients, Post-Adjustment Emissions Coefficients, Etc., Fiscal 2009" released by the Ministry of the Environment by the amount of energy generated.
